About this page

How to Read These Results

  • Percent proficient or advanced
  • ELA and Math
  • Grades 3 through 7
  • All 11 schools that give the M-STEP

Each figure is the share of students who scored proficient or advanced. Elementary schools are compared using Grades 3 through 5. Middle schools are compared using Grades 6 and 7. Elementary and middle schools are shown separately because the grade levels are different.

BCS (Birmingham Covington School) is a school of choice operating within the district. It serves Grades 3 through 8, so it appears in both groups, as a reference point for what is achievable within the same system.

Spring 2018 through Spring 2026

There are no 2020 results. State testing was paused that spring because of COVID-19.

Section 4

Change Since 2022

Percentage points gained or lost, Spring 2022 to Spring 2026

Spring 2022 was the first year all schools were back to full in-person testing after COVID-19, which makes it the fairest starting point. Bars to the right are schools above where they were in 2022. Bars to the left are schools below it.

Birmingham Public Schools, 2025 Annual Report: M-STEP Assessment Results (PDF)The district's own table of percent proficient by school, grade and subjectSpring 2018 through Spring 2025

Results are rounded to the nearest whole percent. Grade 8 is not shown because the state uses the PSAT 8/9 for 8th grade ELA and Math. Seaholm and Groves do not give the M-STEP in these subjects. Spring 2018 through Spring 2025 figures match the district's 2025 annual report, with three exceptions where the report differs from the state's published result and the state's figure is used: Derby Grade 6 Math in 2018 (report 26%, state 67.9%), Beverly Grade 3 ELA in 2023 (report 70%, state 69.4%) and BCS Grade 7 ELA in 2023 (report 73%, state 72.3%). Spring 2026 figures were pulled from mischooldata.org in October 2026.
